AI as your study buddy, not your answer key

AI can explain, quiz you and help you plan. But if it does your homework, your brain misses the workout.

1/4
In simple words
If a friend lifts weights for you at the gym, whose muscles grow? Theirs! Learning is the same. If AI does your homework, its answer gets written, but your brain doesn't grow.
AI can be a great study buddy: patient, available, and happy to explain again. It becomes a problem when it turns into an answer key you just copy.
Note
Many chatbots are only for ages 13 and up. If you are younger, or the app says so, use it with a parent or teacher. And always follow your school's rules about AI.

Good ways to use a study buddy

Ask it to…Example
Explain simply"Explain fractions using pizza slices, for a Class 5 student."
Quiz you"Ask me 5 questions on the water cycle, one at a time. Don't give answers until I try."
Give hints"I'm stuck on this maths problem. Give me a hint, not the answer."
Check your thinking"Here is my answer and my steps. Where did I go wrong?"
Make a plan"Help me make a 2-week revision plan for my science exam, 1 hour a day."
Answer key (not helpful)
  • "Write my essay on Diwali"
  • "Solve all 10 homework sums"
  • Copying the answer without reading it
Study buddy (helpful)
  • "Give me 3 ideas for my Diwali essay, then I'll write it"
  • "Show me how to solve one sum, then I'll try the rest"
  • Explaining the answer in your own words

The "explain it back" test

After AI helps you, close the app and explain the idea to a parent, a sibling or even your pet. If you can explain it without looking, you really learned it.
Watch out
Teachers usually notice copied work, and in exams you won't have AI. Copying now means struggling later.
Try this. With a parent, ask a chatbot: "Quiz me on this week's science chapter, one question at a time, and give hints if I'm wrong."

Lab

A study session where AI quizzes you instead of answering for you.

~15 min

The problem

Do this with a parent or teacher, on a chatbot your family is allowed to use (check the age rules).

  1. Pick one topic from this week's lessons.
  2. Ask the chatbot to quiz you with 5 questions, one at a time, with hints but not answers.
  3. Write down your answers on paper before checking.
  4. Close the app and explain the topic to your adult in your own words.
  5. Write 2 sentences: what did you learn, and was any AI answer wrong or confusing?

You are done when

Hard questions

Try to answer before you reveal. If you can answer these, you understood the lesson.

Q1Why is asking "Give me a hint" better for learning than asking for the answer?Reveal

A hint leaves the last step for you, so your brain has to connect the ideas. That effort is what makes you remember. When you only read an answer, it feels clear for a moment, but you often forget it quickly.

Q2Your friend says, "AI can do it, so why learn it?" What would you say?Reveal

You need knowledge in your own head to understand the world, to check if AI is right, and to do well in exams and life. You can't check an answer you don't understand. AI helps people who already know things much more than people who don't.

Questions people ask

Is using AI for homework cheating?

It depends on how you use it and your school's rules. Using AI to understand is usually fine. Handing in AI's work as your own is not. When unsure, ask your teacher.

What if I really don't understand my teacher?

AI can explain in a different way, and that can help. But also tell your teacher. They want to know and can help you best.

Can AI replace tuition or teachers?

No. AI can help you practise, but teachers know you, notice when you're confused, and guide you. AI is an extra helper, not a replacement.
