Careers in AI, in India and beyond

AI careers are not only for coders. Here are the main roles, realistic paths into them and free places to start, with no promises.

1/5
In simple words
Building a cricket stadium needs many people: builders, groundskeepers, coaches, ticket sellers and safety staff. AI is similar. It needs many kinds of people, not only programmers.
When people say “AI careers”, they often imagine only researchers with advanced degrees. In reality, AI work involves many roles, with different skills and different entry paths.

Common roles

RoleWhat they doTypical starting skills
Data annotator / data workerLabel and check examples that AI learns fromAttention to detail, language skills, basic computer use
Data analystFind patterns in data and explain themSpreadsheets, basic statistics, some SQL or Python
Machine learning engineerBuild, train and run modelsProgramming, maths, software engineering
AI product managerDecide what an AI product should do and for whomUnderstanding users, communication, basic AI knowledge
AI trainer / evaluatorTest AI answers and write examples to improve themSubject knowledge, clear writing, careful judgement
AI policy, ethics and safetyStudy risks, write rules, check fairnessLaw, social science, research skills, AI basics
Domain expert using AIApply AI in health, farming, law, education and moreDeep knowledge of their own field

Paths people take

  1. 1

    Learn the basics

Start with free beginner courses about what AI is and how it is used.
  2. 2

    Choose a direction

Technical (coding, data), human (product, training, policy) or your own field plus AI.
  3. 3

    Build small projects

Analyse a public dataset, write a guide, or document how you used AI to solve a real problem.
  4. 4

    Show your work

Keep a simple portfolio: a document, blog or code page explaining what you did and learned.
  5. 5

    Connect and apply

Join communities, attend free events, and apply for internships or entry roles.

Free places to start

  • Elements of AI: a free introduction for non-technical learners.
  • SWAYAM and NPTEL: free Indian online courses, including computer science and data topics.
  • Kaggle Learn: short free lessons on Python, data and machine learning.
  • fast.ai: a free practical deep-learning course for people who can code a little.
Watch out
No course, certificate or bootcamp can guarantee you an AI job or a salary. Be wary of anyone who promises that, especially if they ask for large fees up front or loans.
Weak approach
  • Collecting many certificates without doing projects
  • Chasing only the most famous job titles
  • Paying for expensive courses before trying free ones
Stronger approach
  • Finishing a few real projects you can explain
  • Combining AI with a field you already know
  • Using free resources first and building steadily
Real example
Everyday example. Anjali studied agriculture in Nagpur. She did not become a programmer. She learned data basics from free courses and now helps a farm-support organisation check whether an AI crop-advice tool gives sensible answers for local conditions. Her farming knowledge is her advantage.
Note
Careers in AI exist around the world, and many are remote. Pay, demand and required qualifications change often, so check current job listings rather than relying on old articles.
Try this. Search a trusted job site for three AI-related roles. For each, list the skills asked for. Circle the skills you already have and pick one to start learning this month.

Lab

A six-month personal path into an AI-related role, based on real job listings.

~30 min

The problem

Plan a realistic path into one AI-related role.

  1. Find three real job listings for a role that interests you (note the site and date).
  2. List the skills they ask for and mark which you already have.
  3. Choose two free resources for your missing skills.
  4. Design one small project you could finish in a month that shows those skills (no coding required if your role does not need it — for example, an evaluation report of an AI tool in your field).
  5. Write a month-by-month six-month plan, with one clear check for each month.

Hard questions

Try to answer before you reveal. If you can answer these, you understood the lesson.

Q1Why might a nurse who learns AI basics be more valuable to a health AI project than a coder with no health knowledge?Reveal

Because the nurse can tell whether the AI's output is safe and sensible in real clinical situations, knows how patients and staff actually behave, and can spot dangerous mistakes a coder would miss. Many AI projects fail not because the code is weak, but because the builders did not understand the real work. Both skills are needed, but domain knowledge is harder to replace.

Q2If AI can help write code, will programming skills become worthless?Reveal

Unlikely in the near term. Someone still needs to understand what the code should do, check whether it is correct and secure, and fix it when it breaks. What changes is the mix: less time typing routine code, more time on design, review and testing. People who understand the fundamentals are best placed to use AI coding tools well.

Questions people ask

Do I need a computer science degree?

For some research and engineering roles, a strong technical background helps a lot. For many other roles, such as data work, evaluation, product, policy and domain-expert jobs, people come from many backgrounds. Skills you can show matter a great deal.

Can I learn in my own language?

Some courses offer content or subtitles in Indian languages, and platforms such as SWAYAM and NPTEL have been adding more. Many AI tools also work in several languages, which can help you practise.

Is data annotation a good career?

It can be a useful entry point and source of income, and some people move on to quality, training or analyst roles. Pay and conditions vary widely, so check the employer carefully and know your rights as a worker.

How do I avoid fake AI job offers?

Be careful with offers that ask you to pay to get a job, give no clear company details, or come only through chat apps. Check the company's official website and search for reviews.
