Voice clones and fake calls

AI can copy a voice. Learn how scammers use this, and a simple family plan that beats them.

1/6
In simple words
You know how some people can copy a cricket commentator's voice? AI can copy a voice too, and much better. It may need only a short clip, like a video you posted or a voice note.
A voice clone is a fake voice made by AI that sounds like a real person. Scammers can use it to call someone and pretend to be a family member.

Two tricks to know

Real example
Trick 1. You get a call. It sounds like Papa: "Beta, I'm in trouble. I lost my phone. Send money quickly and don't tell Mummy."
Real example
Trick 2. A parent gets a call. A crying voice sounds like their child: "Mummy, help me!" Then a stranger says, "Pay now or something bad will happen."
Both tricks use the same things: a familiar voice, fear, hurry and secrecy. Scammers want you too scared to think.

Your family plan

  1. 1

    Pick a code word

Choose a secret family word together, like a silly fruit or a made-up word. Never post it online.
  2. 2

    Ask for it

If a call says "I'm in trouble", ask for the code word. A scammer won't know it.
  3. 3

    Hang up and call back

Call the person on the number saved in your phone, not the number that called.
  4. 4

    Tell an adult

Tell a parent or trusted adult straight away, even if the caller said "keep it secret".
Danger
Never share an OTP (the one-time code that comes by SMS) with anyone, even someone who sounds like family, a bank, or the police. Real banks and police don't ask for your OTP on a call.
What the scammer wants
  • Act fast, don't think
  • Keep it secret
  • Send money or an OTP now
What you do instead
  • Slow down and breathe
  • Tell a trusted adult
  • Hang up and call back on the saved number
Note
Having a voice online is fine. Just remember that anyone's voice can be copied, so a voice alone is not proof of who is calling.
Tonight at dinner. Ask your family: "Do we have a code word?" If not, make one together.

Lab

A family safety card with your code word plan.

~10 min

The problem

Do this with a parent or guardian.

  1. Choose a family code word together. Don't write the word itself on the card.
  2. On a small card, write the 4 steps: ask for the code word, hang up, call back on the saved number, tell an adult.
  3. Add two numbers: 1930 (cybercrime helpline) and 112 (emergency).
  4. Role-play once: one person pretends to be a scammer on a "call", the other uses the steps.

Hard questions

Try to answer before you reveal. If you can answer these, you understood the lesson.

Q1Why does the scammer say "don't tell anyone"?Reveal

Because telling someone breaks the trick. Another person can calm you down, call the real family member and spot the scam. Whenever someone asks you to keep a scary or money secret, that is a big red flag. Tell a trusted adult.

Q2Why call back on the saved number instead of the number that called?Reveal

Scammers can fake the number that shows up on your screen, and they control the number they called from. The number saved in your phone reaches the real person. If they answer calmly and say "I'm fine", you know it was a trick.

Questions people ask

Can AI really copy a voice from a short clip?

Yes, some tools can make a voice that sounds close to a real person from a short recording. It may not be perfect, but on a scary, rushed phone call it can be enough to fool people.

What if the caller knows my name and school?

Scammers sometimes find details online. Knowing your name doesn't prove anything. Ask for the code word, or hang up and call back on a saved number.

Isn't it rude to hang up on family?

Not at all. Your real family will be happy you were careful. Calling back takes one minute and keeps everyone safe.

What should my parents do if they get a scary call about me?

Stay calm, hang up, and call you (or your school) directly. If money was lost or someone threatened them, they can call the cybercrime helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. In danger, call 112.
