What a prompt is and why wording matters

A prompt is simply what you write to an AI. Small changes in wording can change the answer a lot. Here is why.

1/5
In simple words
A prompt is your message to the AI. If you tell a friend "get me something to eat", you might get chips. If you say "get me two bananas from the fruit shop", you get exactly that. AI is the same.
A prompt is the text (or voice, or image) you give an AI model. The model reads it and writes the most likely useful reply. It cannot read your mind. It only has your words, and whatever the app adds behind the scenes.

Why wording matters

A language model continues text based on patterns. A short, vague prompt fits thousands of possible answers, so the model picks a very general one. A clear prompt narrows the options to what you actually want.
Vague prompttext
Tell me about rice.
Clear prompttext
I am a farmer in Tamil Nadu growing paddy for the first time.
Explain the main stages of growing rice, from seed to harvest,
in 6 short bullet points. Use simple words.
The first prompt might get you the history of rice, its nutrition, or recipes. The second tells the model who you are, what you need and what shape the answer should take.

A prompt is a conversation, not a magic spell

Common myths
  • There is one secret perfect prompt
  • Long prompts are always better
  • If the answer is bad, the AI is useless
What actually works
  • Clear, plain language, then adjusting
  • Enough detail to be clear, and no more
  • Reply with what was wrong and ask again
  1. 1

    Ask

Write what you want as clearly as you can.
  2. 2

    Read

Is it right? Is it the right length and style?
  3. 3

    Adjust

Say what to change: "Shorter", "simpler words", "add an example".
  4. 4

    Repeat

Two or three rounds usually give a much better result.
Note
The same prompt can give a different answer each time. That is normal; the model has some randomness. If an answer matters, ask again or check it.
Try this. Ask a chatbot "Tell me about cricket." Then ask "Explain the basic rules of Test cricket to a 10-year-old in 5 bullet points." Compare the two answers.

Lab

Three versions of one prompt, and a note on what changed.

~15 min

The problem

Pick a real question from your life (study, work, cooking, travel).

  1. Write a very short version (3–5 words) and send it to a free chatbot.
  2. Write a clearer version that says who you are and what you need. Send it.
  3. Read the answer and send one follow-up message that says what to change.
  4. Write 2–3 sentences: which answer was most useful, and why?

Hard questions

Try to answer before you reveal. If you can answer these, you understood the lesson.

Q1If the model only predicts likely text, why does adding "for a 10-year-old" change the answer so much?Reveal

Because text written for children has its own patterns: short sentences, simple words, everyday examples. The phrase shifts which patterns are most likely, so the whole reply moves toward that style. Each detail you add changes what "likely" means.

Q2Can a prompt be too detailed? Give an example.Reveal

Yes. If you add many rules that conflict ("be very short" and "explain everything in detail"), or bury the real question under unrelated background, the model may follow the wrong part or miss the key point. Include what matters for this task, put the main request clearly, and remove the rest.

Questions people ask

Do I need to use special words or English only?

No special words needed. Plain, clear language works best. Many chatbots understand Indian languages too, though quality can vary. You can even mix languages if that is how you think.

Do I need to be polite to the AI?

Politeness is not required for it to work, but clear and calm wording helps. Being polite is also a good habit that carries into how you write to people.

Why does it answer differently when I ask the same thing twice?

Models choose words with some randomness, so answers vary. The main facts should stay the same. If they change a lot, that is a sign to check carefully.

Is prompting a real skill?

Yes. It is mostly clear thinking and clear writing: knowing what you want and saying it well. These skills help with people too.
